WORLD STEEL ASSOCIATION
The World Steel Association (worldsteel) is one of the world’s largest industrial associations, representing about 85% of global steel production. It comprises over 160 steelmakers, national and regional industrial associations, and research institutions. One of worldsteel’s tasks is to study the metallurgical industry’s impact on global climate change.
In October 2007, Metinvest was the first Ukrainian steelmaker to become a permanent member of worldsteel.
In 2008, the Group joined worldsteel’s Global Sectoral Approach initiative, which requires companies to calculate their Carbon Intensity Index, which measures the amount of greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of steel produced. This calculation makes it possible to forecast greenhouse gas emission trends from the steel industry through 2050, as well as to identify priority measures and technologies that will reduce these emissions. As part of this initiative, Metinvest annually discloses the aggregate greenhouse gas emissions from all its operations.
